I created these portraits for myIllustration Materials and Techniques course at SCAD. See process photos and descriptions of materials below!
The first 3 portraits required us to use graphite on bristol for 2 different techniques: hatching and smoothing.
The next assignment tasked us with using gouache on illustration board to create both a transparent "watercolor" look and an opaque "acrylic" look.
The final portrait project utilized a technique that was completely foreign to me: gum arabic and ink on illustration board. The gum acts as a masking fluid, so I began by painting it on to the areas that I wished to keep white, let it dry, and adding a light value of ink. Next, I used the gum to mask out the second lightest areas, let it dry, painted on a slightly darker value ink, and completed this process for about 7 layers. At the end, the entire piece of illustration board was run under water to rinse off the gum and reveal the final painting! Finally, I worked back into the portraits with more ink and also graphite to add details that were lost in the rinsing process.
